Importance of Reading Technical Drawings

As a welder, you understand that the speed and quality of assembly of any structure depend on your ability to read technical drawings. You also know how important it is to have European Certification 9606-1 to qualify as a welder. But what else do you need to know about why it's so important to be able to read technical drawings?


The process of creating technical drawings 

The first step in reading technical drawings is understanding the process by which they are created.

  • Technical drawings begin with an engineering or architect drawing that outlines what the finished product should look like as well as its dimensions and other characteristics.
  • This drawing is then transformed into a series of technical drawings, each one detailing a specific part of the structure being built.
  • Once these individual parts are complete, they can be welded together to create the final assembly.

       Once you understand how these technical drawings are created, you'll need to learn how to read them accurately and efficiently. Reading technical drawings involves more than just looking at a piece of paper:

  • it requires an understanding of different welding symbols;
  • line types;
  • other drawing conventions;
  • it also requires an understanding of basic geometry and trigonometry principles to accurately interpret measurements from the drawing.


Additionally, welders must be familiar with all safety regulations related to welding before starting any project based on a technical drawing. 


The ability to recognize regularities in schemes   

     When interpreting technical drawings, you must pay attention to detail and read between the lines when necessary. It’s not enough just to know what each symbol stands for; you also need to be able to recognize patterns in the diagrams so that you can accurately assemble the object specified in the plan.

This includes:

  • attention to measurements;
  • angles;
  • other specifications so that your work meets the standards required by European certification 9606-1.



Welders need to understand that communication between the constructor/engineer and welders is key when creating any structure based on a set of technical drawings.


  • Designers need feedback from welders to make sure their designs are feasible and safe;
  • Welders need clear instructions from designers for their work to be accurate and efficient.


Without this two-way communication, projects can be delayed or even fail due to miscommunication or misunderstanding between parties involved in the project.


The importance of reading technical drawings cannot be overstated when it comes to welding projects; without an understanding of how these documents work and how they should be interpreted, projects can suffer from costly delays or even complete failure due to miscommunication between the constructor/engineer and welders.
